Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village in New York City is the birthplace of the gay rights movement but has been a center of LGBT rights since the late 19th century. Home to several historic LGBT sites and businesses such as Stonewall Inn, Oscar Wilde's Book Store (the world's oldest gay and lesbian bookstore, now closed down), and the LGBT Community Center, and more, the Village has always been a place of cultural and political movements.

Stonewall Inn in particular holds great value to Greenwich Village. It is the site of the Stonewall riots that kicked off the LGBT rights movement. Additionally it is a place for LGBT people and allies to gather and raise awareness for issues even today. For example, people gathered to celebrate the ruling of same sex marriage in June 2015 and for a vigil to mourn for the lives lost in the Pulse Night Club massacre in June 2016.
