Provincetown, Massachusetts

Provincetown, Massachusetts is another important gay village in America. This town grew in tourism starting in the early 1900s and was populated by artists, other creatives, and people of bohemian culture. Around the 20s and 30s, the gay population began to really grow and outnumber the artist population. This "art colony" was and still is a place of freedom and acceptance for the LBGT community and continues to foster a welcoming culture. Like Fire Island, Provincetown became a place that was popular for the queer community to summer in, however Provincetown features a larger year-round population. The 70s in Provincetown featured many festivals for the LGBT community and drew in tourist. This gay village is another example of a queer space that exists and supports the LGBT community and is queer by community.
